Arizona, flag![]() The Arizona flag was designed in 1910 by Col. Charles W. Harris for the Arizona rifle team to take to the national matches at Camp Perry. Col. Harris didn't like the fact that the Arizona team was the only team that didn't carry a state flag to the championship. In spite of Col. Harris's initiative, the flag was not officially adopted until 1917. The upper portion of the flag contains six light yellow and seven red segments. The 13 segments represent the 13 original colonies. The ray pattern represents the Western setting sun. Additionally, these colors were the colors carried by Coronado's 1540 expedition into Arizona in his quest for the seven cities of Cibola. The blue field is the same liberty blue as the field on the United States flag. Since Arizona was (and still is) the largest copper producer in the nation, a copper, five-pointed star was placed in the center. /Source: ag.arizona.edu/
