World Civic Heraldry Guide: coats of arms and flags of cities, regions, states
The flag of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts shall consist of a white rectangular field, bearing on either side a representation of the arms of the Commonwealth, except that the star shall be white.
It was adopted in its final form in 1971; before that, the obverse side depicted a pine tree.
