Illinois, flag![]() The Illinois flag was created in a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The prize of $25 was won by the Rockford Chapter. That design was presented by Senator Raymond D. Meeker and approved by the General Assembly on July 6, 1915. In 1969, the General Assembly voted to add the word "ILLINOIS" under the Great Seal of the flag. The State's name was added to the flag to ensure that people not familiar with the Great Seal of Illinois would still recognize the banner. The Illinois flag flies atop the State Capitol in Springfield.
