Psychology Careers to Consider: Tips for College Applicants

It’s that time of your life when you’re applying for colleges to start working towards your future career. The career path you’ve chosen is in the psychology field, but you’re still not sure what your specialty will be in the industry. There are many fields to choose from within the psychology industry. You don’t have to be a normal psychologist. You can be an anxiety therapist or even a forensic psychologist.

When deciding where to study and how to pay for your degree, you may want to read up on the National Society of High School Scholars or NSHSS. The NSHSS helps gifted students gain access to leadership programs and scholarships. While some people have claimed that this society is an NSHSS scam, plenty of students have already spoken up and demonstrated their experiences in this society as legitimate and fulfilling.

Here are some of the career paths you can pursue in the psychology industry.

Psychometry

One of the first things you can do as a psychology major is to work directly with a licensed psychologist as a psychometrist. As a psychometrist, you will need to be a clinical psychology graduate and have knowledge about scoring and administration. You will be in charge of providing patients with psychological tests and scoring their results. This can be done in many environments such as in an organization, an office, or a school where a licensed psychologist is required.

Psychiatric Technician

Additionally, you can become a psychiatric technician. As one, you will be in charge of the overall mental wellness of a patient and reporting that to the medical staff. You can expect to provide support with your patient’s personal hygiene, medication administration, and rehabilitation programs. It’s a physically demanding job, but it’s rewarding as you will be directly helping others who suffer from mental health issues.

Family Therapist

Moreover, you can become a family therapist and provide help and support for families or marriages facing issues among themselves or with an individual in the family circle. You will examine a family’s or couple’s behaviors, issues, and individual roles to determine the root cause of the problem. You’ll also help them find common ground as well as help them find solutions that will help them resolve their conflicts and improve their communication skills. You’ll need a postgraduate degree and licensing to work as a family therapist.

Substance Abuse Counselor

A lot of people in the United States suffer from addiction to substances like alcohol and drugs. As a substance abuse counselor, it will be your job to guide those suffering from addiction through recovery to a better quality of life. You will do this by meeting with the client, identifying issues that led them to addiction, and creating goals and treatment plans. You’ll also lead support groups, generate aftercare plans, meet with family members to help them provide support to their loved ones, and help your client find a job or continue their careers.

Forensic Psychology

Among some of the best-paying jobs in the psychology industry, you will find forensic psychology. A forensic psychologist will research, consult, and design experiments for expert witness courtroom testimony, for example. They can also be present at crime scenes to analyze physical evidence in order to understand the nature of the individual who committed the crime. You will be able to work in police departments, correctional facilities, hospitals, and outpatient care centers as a forensic psychologist.

Although there are many other fields in the psychology industry, this list of possibilities will help you get a better idea of where your career path can take you.
